The European Association for Sociology of Sport (EASS) was founded on November 16, 2001 in Vienna. It is a non-profit organization with the purpose of promoting social sciences and social research in sport at the European level and to offer scientific advice to European institutions such as the EU and the Council of Europe.

The European Sociological Association (ESA) aims to facilitate sociological research, teaching and communication between sociologists, sociologists and other scientists, and to give sociology a voice in European affairs. Its focus is the development of sociological knowledge. Research Network 28 studies the role sport plays in contemporary societies, how that role has changed over time, and whether and how sports foster or inhibit social cohesion and inequality.
